Artist: Valerie Purcell
I've been an artist my whole life (born with a crayon). I
tend to see the world a tad differently than most people: through irony-colored glasses & a dash of sarcasm. I have spent half of a century trying every
kind of arts and crafts technique that interests me and only have another 50
or so years left to get to the rest I want to try!
Texas ABC's: Armadillo, Bluebells & Cotton & Chiles! 2011.
Acrylic paint, aluminum, metal cage clips, screws, etc... on wood.
(SOLD)
I have an over-developed sense of humor, a mental health need to create & constantly see irony in the things that become icons to us humans (hence: Ironic Icons!). I'm drawn to the “enlightened” and all-to-quickly changing sensibilities that came from the Empire’s technical & sociological advancements and the American westward movements. But as a criminal justice major & history minor, the inception of the detective at this time is the bee’s knee!

Mediums used
I have always loved making collages, so it is great that the mainstream art world is wandering into crowded & discombobulated places in my head, with their "new" appreciation for “found object,” or “altered,” and especially “Steampunk” art! Plus those are much nicer terms than “junk art.”
I dig texture, depth, and layers of mixed mediums. Although I still draw, paint, and sculpt, I usually collage over it. As a former “junk artist” (“upcycle”), I have a long history of turning old/discarded items into re-purposed elements. My favorite art stores are the hardware stores and other people’s “trash.”
Texas Calico The background & flag is acrylic paint, Calico Cat is glue, papers, & real cat whiskers. The Alamo is layers of cardboard. I fashioned the armadillo out of tin pieces and the longhorn out of leather & cardboard. The butterfly is plastic painted vellum. Multi-medium extravaganza!
